Goalkeeper complex

If we are to be promoted this season the general feeling is that Green would sign a new deal with us but, if he doesn't, who could we get in the replace him? Manuel Almunia made for very good cover when we brought him in on an emergency loan and reports suggested that he would love a move to the East End which is a very promising development. Since Szczesny has cemented his position as Arsenal's number 1, Manuel Almunia has fallen down the pecking order and one would imagine he'd love the chance at first team football, especially if we are promoted.

If we're not promoted, however, would he still want to join us? I like to think he would, as we would be in a strong position to go up next season and he didn't mind dropping down to the Championship for first team football earlier in the season, albeit for a month on loan. We have also been linked with a move for Leicester stopper Kasper Schmeichel who I believe would be a very good addition to any squad in the country. If he goes on to be half as good as his old man was he'll have a great career ahead of him and the fact that he's already established himself as two different Championship teams' number 1 at a young age is a good sign that he has what it takes to play at the highest level.

The worrying thing for me is the lack of faith from Big Sam in our younger 'keepers Boffin and Stech. The infamous 'insider' Clunge claims that Big Sam doesn't rate any of our other goalies but young Jake Larkins, the U18's stopper looks very promising. Of the goalkeepers we've been linked with, in my opinion Almunia is by far the best option as he seemed to slip seamlessly into the side when called upon and put in some impressive displays, however the main priority has to be nailing Green down on a new contract if/when we go up as he is having the season of his life and has been a key player this term.

COME ON YOU IRONS!
